Control Tips for Homeowners
Finding rodents in a home is one of the most
disturbing things any homeowner can go through. Some of us can have sleepless
nights knowing that there are mice or any other rodents within your home.
Rodents will mostly hide in specific areas at the home, especially the
basement, dining room or kitchen- dark places and areas with leftovers. But
instead of being scared out of your home when you see a rodent, remain composed
and look for ways to get rid of them.
How did they get in?
One of the things that you’ll probably be wondering
when you see rodents in your home is how they got there. Well, rodents can get
into your home through a small open or even crack. They basically require very
little space to get in. Small mice can fit through the tiniest of spaces so you
need to be very careful when you have cracks or openings in certain areas of
your home. Most rodents usually get inside homes during the winter months
because it’s very cold outside and they are seeking shelter indoors. So if you
leave an opening in your home, you’ll have an unpleasant surprise.
The damage caused by rodents
Once inside your home, rodents not only become a
nuisance but they can cause a lot of health issues. First, they can damage your
electrical wires and even put your home at risk of fire. The worst thing about
having rodents running around your home is that they can contribute to numerous
bacterial infections especially if you have young ones. These rodents will
carry bacteria and contaminate any foods you leave lying around the home. Some
rodents are even known to transmit deadly bacteria which cause very serious
infections. A good example is the white-footed deer mouse which is considered
very dangerous.
In order to keep your home safe from rodents, one of
the things that you can start doing is making sure there are no openings for
them to use to enter your home. Screen the vents and openings to the chimneys
and cover or repair any broken areas on your doors or windows. Check for cracks
or holes on areas outside your home like the pipes and makes sure they are
completely sealed. Basements and attics should also be kept dry and well
ventilated.
Remember that rodents usually breed in places where
there’s lots of moisture so make sure you eliminate areas that accumulate water
like fixing leaking pipes and clogged drains. Rodents can get into your home
from outside so make sure you check any boxes or packages that are brought to
your home before storing them in your basement. Also make sure you dispose
garbage regularly and don’t leave anything hanging around the house to attract
rodents.
In case you notice rodents in your home, make sure you
call a licensed pest professional to handle the problem immediately. Rodents can
multiply faster than you’d ever imagined so dealing with the problem
immediately will prevent a host of issues.
