How to Deal with Common Pests that Invade the Home

It’s important to take several precautions against certain pests that are likely to invade your home. Dealing with pests can become a nuisance. Some of them bite and damage items like furnishings and cause nasty smells. Many of them can cause health issues like allergies and asthma. To protect your home and family, you need to be aware of all the pests that are likely to invade your home and do what it takes to keep them at bay.

House mice

Mice can invade your home through a small opening like a crack or hole on the outside of your home. When they invade your home, mice can contaminate food and even cause extensive property damage. You’ll mostly find mice in dark and isolated areas such as the basement but sometimes they may be present in the kitchen below the sinks and even in the living areas. To get rid of mice, seal any holes or cracks in your home. You also need to avoid storing large boxes on the floor because they provide a home for mice.

Cockroaches

Cockroaches are usually attracted by particles of food and moisture. You’ll find them inside your kitchen appliances or any other place where there could be leftovers. Cockroaches are really bad because they contaminate food and spread bacteria from one place to the other. Cockroaches are also known to trigger serious allergies and breathing problems especially among children. You need to avoid cockroaches by making sure the counters, especially in the kitchen and living area, are wiped clean. Clean the floors and get rid of garbage from your home more frequently. If you notice too many cockroaches under appliances and sinks, get a professional to remove them completely.

Spiders

There are different types of spiders that may invade a home. Spiders usually like dark places where they can stay undisturbed. You’ll find them in cartons of unused clothing and shoes in the basement. Spiders are very dangerous because they can bite and inject venom into the human blood. To reduce the chances of spiders invading your home, you need to store unused items like clothing in plastic containers instead of cardboard boxes and make sure there are no limbs hanging on your roof or overgrown shrubs in your backyard.

Clover mites

Clover mites usually invade homes during the cooler months and even though they don’t cause any health problems, they can be a really big nuisance. They find their way into homes via cracks and gaps on the foundation. You can eliminate clover mites by simple vacuuming. But if they invade your home, you can always call in a professional to get rid of them completely.

Millipedes and centipedes

These insects love damp places so you are likely to find them in your bathroom or in moist basements. They usually feed on insects and spiders so having them in your home could be a sign that there are more pests around. To control them, you’ll need adequate moisture control indoors and also seal holes and cracks around the foundation.
